The cultural conflict between single women from collective and macho cultures and single men from individualistic cultures can be rooted in differences in communication styles besides expectations and gender roles.

Why is this a challenge for single women with the baggage of collective and macho cultures while dating in an individualistic culture?

In collective and macho cultures, it is expected that men should be dominant, assertive, and in control. Women, on the other hand, may be expected to be more respectful, less assertive, and guarded in their communication. Cultural expectations(home culture) on gender roles form the identity and the communication styles of single women as they reflect them in their interactions with men from individualistic cultures(host culture) in dating and relating.

In contrast, individualistic cultures often promote equality and independence in relationships. Single men from individualistic cultures may be more accustomed to direct and egalitarian communication styles. They may prioritize direct and explicit communication, while collective cultures often rely on indirect communication and non-verbal cues. This difference can lead to misunderstandings and frustration in intercultural relationships.

This cultural cluster can create a conflict when these two groups interact, as the women may find the men’s communication style too direct or assertive, while the men may perceive the women as passive or reserved.

It was also my personal challenge when I perceived my ex-Canadian Dutch husband as aggressive, unpolite, and disrespectful when he was assertive and honest while expressing his thoughts and feelings. It took me years to understand Dutch “directness” as a way of “telling the truth” until I became aware of my indirect language and reserved style of communicating.

My communication style was not helping me to express my thoughts, feelings, and needs. After I started learning Dutch, I recognized that I was not assertive enough, not comfortable enough to say “no”, and not giving priority to my own needs over those of my ex-husband.

Learning the language and adapting Dutch “directness” was a deep transformation of my identity while living in my adopted land. I felt fear and guilt through being more expressive than reserved at the beginning but gradually it became part of my new cultural identity.

When I had more rigid personal boundaries in a certain context, this cultural difference was leading to misunderstandings and discomfort between us. When I had more loose boundaries in my cultural context, I was unintentionally violating his personal space and this was causing tension or confusion in our relationship.

Setting boundaries is the most important communication and relationship skill. Without establishing and enforcing solid boundaries we cannot create and maintain meaningful and fulfilling relationships. It’s especially a gateway to resolving cultural conflicts in intercultural relationships.

Solid boundaries are strong, flexible, and adaptable boundaries and can help single women from collective and macho cultures feel safe, comfortable, and free in dating and relating to men from individualistic cultures by creating clear expectations and reducing misunderstandings. Here’s how:

  • Safety: Solid boundaries can help women feel physically and emotionally safe in interactions. They can communicate their limits clearly and assertively, ensuring that their personal space and feelings are respected in dating and relating.
  • Comfort: With solid boundaries, women can express themselves authentically without fear of overstepping cultural norms or violating personal boundaries. This can lead to a true connection and genuine exchange of thoughts, emotions, and expectations. When difficult conversations and cultural conflicts are likely to emerge, boundaries empower both parties to resolve conflicts without compromising their own personal values.
  • Freedom: Having solid boundaries allows women to engage in communication on their terms, without feeling pressured to conform to cultural expectations that may be at odds with their personal preferences. It gives them the freedom to assert themselves and express their needs, thoughts, and feelings without fear of judgment or misinterpretation.

Successful intercultural dating for single international women from collectivist cultures in individualistic cultures requires open communication, mutual respect, and a willingness to learn and adapt to each other’s cultural backgrounds and values. It can be challenging, but it can also lead to enriching and fulfilling relationships.

What is your biggest challenge when it comes to dating in an individualistic culture with your collective style of communication? And how does your indirect language and reserved style of communication contribute to these challenges?
